About Us

i.C.A.R.E. was set up in September 2000. There was an obvious need for local support, training and information in the Inishowen area. As a result of this need, parents got together locally and formed i.C.A.R.E.

Our Vision:

“To improve the quality of life of individuals with autism and their families throughout their lives”.

What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD, is a lifelong condition, which affects the individuals ability to communicate, form relationships and understand everyday activities. The condition can affect people different degrees, some with severe communication and social interaction difficulties, whilst others may be skilled in their use of language but still have a range of complex needs regarding social interaction and understanding the motivation of others.

Some common characteristics are repetitive behaviours linked to particular interests, patterns of communication in speech, and non-verbal communication, which are not typical, and difficulties in social settings often resulting in a strong resistance to change. Fear or anxiety can cause high levels of frustration, sometimes resulting in extreme behaviours.

People with autism and their families require a range of specialist advice and support. Children must receive appropriate education to develop their full potential. The individuals communication system must be understood by those who would offer such support and education, and, through person centred planning the individual will be able to make significant advances in social skills, the ability to form relationships, and in his/her understanding of everyday activities.

People with autism must be afforded every opportunity to work and participate within their community and to achieve full citizenship. There a wide range of therapy options and it is usually left to the parents to seek out the support and information they need, it does not come to them.

Autism will affect each individual differently and this needs to be taken account of when assessing needs and providing solutions. The individual and family needs will change as the child grows and transitions into adulthood.

Our Mission is:

“To provide a framework within which families, health, education and special needs professionals can access training, support, education and respite care”
